WOODFORD: Historic buildings saved - for now
 |
| Residents opposed to the development at Broomhill Walk |
A KEY battle in the campaign to save two historic houses from being demolished and turned into flats has been won by residents.
Redbridge Council turned down planning applications to build flats at 5 Bedford Road in South Woodford and 6 Broomhill Walk in Woodford Green after local people bombarded councillors with letters, petitions and protests, claiming the developments would ruin the unique character of the areas.
Sue Brown lives just feet away from the proposed development of the historic house in Bedford Road, and has been spearheading the campaign to save it.
She said: "Obviously we're delighted that the plans have been rejected for now, but we don't know if they'll appeal or not.
"This is quite a populated area already, and we feel the flats would spoil its history.
"There was an amazing amount of support for the campaigns and we will keep fighting it until the very end."
Council officers turned down plans for the 12 flats in Bedford Road on grounds of excessive density, lack of amenities and space, the effect on the character of the neighbourhood and a lack of parking.
Rais Nisar lives next door to the planned development site in Broomhill Walk and has been taking a key role in the protests there.
He said: "This is an extremely nice area and I think we should all be fighting to keep it like this for public enjoyment.
"Twenty five people, not only residents but people who use the walk, helped us by writing letters and making objections and it was amazing how much support we got."
Neighbour Ken Ferguson, who also joined the fight to save 6 Broomhill Walk, said the articles in the Guardian helped to drum up local support against other proposed developments, such as Chepstow House in Leicester Road, Wanstead, and two houses in Whitehall Road, Woodford Green.
He added: "The local support was very good and the Guardian article helped to raise a lot of old fire in my belly and in others.
"These are developments that everyone should be fighting against."

I want to report the above poster on the grounds that nobody as thick as he should have a public voice.

Your story 'Historic Houses Saved' is unduly optomistic.
What we have done is won the first battle for these houses. But because the planning laws are loaded in favour of developers we have not won the war.
Developers can, and frequently do appeal to the Planning Inspectorate against Council's refusal of planning permission. The far to often win.
They can also send in amended plans and dare the Council to turn them down or face an appeal.
The real battle for these sites has hardly begun.
The community will need to continue being vigilant and working together to maintain the best in our community

Another contributor has said that he suspects that Mr Khalid is a wind-up merchant. I agree - sometimes he is funny but not this time.

How long before the buildings suffer an "unfortunate fire" like any other old building denied planning permission?

It is human nature that we do not like change when it 'is in our backyard'. I sold my large property to Developers for a tidy sum not long ago and moved here. They fought long and hard to get a block of flats and parking has increased. I could not refuse the money. This house you all refer to is too big and if it were mine I would sell. You should all shut up or you will all be embarrassed when a Developer offers you money you cannot refuse, like the tidy sum I was given. I paid off my mortgage and am quite comfortable, thank you very much and have earned more than I could have dreamed.

Bedford Road has been a pleasant if uninspiring road for the past 75 years - sufficiently convenient and attractive for the Carless family have built a detached house there in the thirties. There lived Dorothy Carless the singer and her younger sister Carol Carr - both celebs in their time! Flats would be an abomination!

These buildings erected at the expense of the poor in victirian times on vast acres of land should be raised to the ground and more affordable housing built for the homeless and single mothers. Who on Earth were the Carless and Carr singers? Never heard of them but obviously priviliged to have been brought up in such splender. One parent families are living in one room!

The building of these masses of thrid rate flats, rather than 3 and 4 bedroomed family houses, feeds the "buy to let" opportunists whose tenants' rents are met by those of us who have been daft enough to work, stupid enough to save for our old age, and are now "fortunate" enough to be taxed to the hilt to pay for housing benefit, child benefit, and all the other benefits that go to those who refuse to work as opposed to being not physically capable of doing so. The UK's aspiration is clearly to become another third world country - but that level is aiming rather high compared witgh where we relly are.

Knock down the houses, fair enough. But lets build an adult education centre and I'll chip in for spelling lessons for Khalid.

I forgot to mention from my last entry that it is all going that way these days. the old houses are not fit for purpose and are a waste of space. That is what my house was like in Walthamstow, before I got offered the deal I could not refused. It was a big house in a large plot. My great aunts. I was only living there on my own, now there will be about 20 people so if you knock them down you get more on. Logic is it not? I benefitted as I paid off my bills and mortgae and moved on.
